Vocal MIXUP

What Is A Vocal MIXUP?

The Vocal Australia team have noticed that a cappella singers have very few opportunities to sing with people outside of their group or choir. We think this is a pity – imagine how much we could all learn as groups and as individuals if we shared our skills and worked together.

The Vocal Mixup is a chance for singers of all different levels to get together for a couple of hours and mix things up a little with new songs and new personnel. It’s a great opportunity for regualr a cappella singers to get singing with new people for a while, and also for new singers to get involved in a cappella. We’re hoping we might see the birth of some new groups out of it as well…

How Does It Work?

After a good bit of physical, mental and vocal warm up, you (the participants) speed learn a song from very simple, stripped back arrangements (sometimes chords, bass notes, melodies, sometimes not!). You are then split into smaller groups to re-arrange, embellish and ‘stupendify’ the song. We then have a small concert and share our ideas about the song.

Some of the things that people look to add, create, vary or refurnish are: tempo, texture, staging, vocal percussion, body percussion, introduction, ending, style and genre. It’s a race against the clock, and everyone’s ideas are important and valuable.

Will I Be Good Enough?

The idea of the Vocal MIXUP sessions is to show you that everyone can arrange a cappella music. It’s more creatively challenging than technically taxing, and there is plenty of support there for everyone of all levels. You might feel overwhelmed at times, but remember, the left-field, “out of the square” ideas are often the best!
